Macular Health

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than ten million Americans – more than cataracts and glaucoma combined. At present, Macular Degeneration is considered an incurable eye disease. It is the breakdown or deterioration of the eye’s macula, a small area in the retinaMacular Degeneration in El Paso responsible for you central or detailed vision.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD or ARMD) ) is the most common type of macular degeneration, because the breakdown is part of the body’s natural aging process. There are two basic types of Macular Degeneration: “Dry” and “Wet”. Approximately 85%-90% of cases are the dry type, while 10%-15% are the wet type.

  • Blank or dark grey spots in your vision

Unfortunately, for someone with macular degeneration, there isn’t much that can be done to improve their vision. However, there are things you can do to reduce your risk and possibly slow progression once you’ve been diagnosed. For Wet AMD, surgery may be an option. A special combination of vitamins and minerals (AREDS Formula), most commonly with zinc, may reduce the progression of Dry AMD.

However a recent study found that, for a percentage of the population with a certain genetic profile, taking the standard AREDS Formula that included zinc, zinc was actually detrimental and accelerated vision loss. That is why El Paso EyeCare works with Arctic genetic testing company to offer our patients the opportunity to be tested if they have been diagnosed with Dry AMD. We can perform two different types of testing: Vita Risk and Macula Risk PGx.

Vita Risk is a pharmacogenetic test designed to aid in the selection of appropriate eye supplement formulations for a patient.

Macula Risk PGx is a combined pharmacogenetic and prognostic DNA test to determine the patient’s risk of progression to advanced AMD based on their individual genetic risk profile and to aid in the selection of appropriate eye supplement formulations for a patient.
